SPE Global Communication
On March 17, the second video conference was held within the framework of the SPE Global Communication project in 2021. The call was attended by 6 activists from the Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter, 2 representatives of the Buenos Aires Institute of Technology SPE Student Chapter (Argentina), as well as 1 representative from the Obafemi Awolowo University SPE Student Chapter (Nigeria).
At the beginning of the call, a small ice-breaking was held, during which the representatives of the universities told about themselves, why they decided to join SPE and what projects they have been involved in.
Then the representatives of Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter spoke about the main activities of their section, as well as its structure. They also introduced the conference-participants to the new project “SPE Frankly”. The representative of the Nigerian section expressed interest in the language clubs of Gubkin University. The representatives of Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter also made a special emphasis on Gubkin University International Educational Summer School held at the university and invited the representatives of the foreign sections to participate in the event in 2021.
Then the representatives of the SPE Chapter of the Institute of Technology of Buenos Aires took the floor. Their presentation was especially well-structured and designed. Of particular interest were the courses on various technical topics that are held at their university (currently online). Despite the fact that most of them are taught in Spanish, the representatives from Argentina promised to contact representatives of Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter when courses in English become available.
Then the representative of the Obafemi Awolowo University Student Chapter gave his presentation. First of all, he cited interesting statistics on the number of activists in their section over the past 10 years. It was clearly shown how sharply the number of the activists of their section fell in 2020. The project that aroused the greatest interest was the international event “SPE Energy” (currently transferred to the online format), within the framework of which students and specialists present their scientific work and exchange experience.
During the last 20 minutes, the representatives of the sections discussed the topic “Workplace environment and culture of young professionals”. 5 aspects were discussed: values, career growth, relationships with colleagues, working benefits and social activities of companies in the countries of representatives. Participants also talked about their experience of doing internships, shared the difficulties they faced and came to the conclusion that, despite the low level of funding for internships for students, they justify their usefulness by the experience that interns acquire.
