THE MEETING WITH 2020 SPE PRESIDENT SHAUNA NOONAN
On December 15, 2020, the board of Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter had a meeting with the 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan. The event was held online. The main topic of the videoconference was the recovery of the oil and gas industry after the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as vectors of development directions for SPE Student Chapters.
The meeting began with the presentation with the main news from Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter for 2019-2020, as well as its achievements and the obstacles it faced over the past year. Particular attention was paid to the projects Energy4Me, SPE Times, SPE Mentoring, SPE Global Communication, that during the epidemiological situation were transferred to the online format and showed good results over the past time, as well as the global projects of the Chapter - the International Youth Scientific and Practical Congress “Oil and Gas Horizons” and Gubkin University International Educational Summer School.
Then Shauna Noonan continued the meeting, talking about the consequences of Covid-19 for the oil and gas industry in the United States and the current situation in the country. The guest of honor also spoke about the role of women in the industry and about the new direction of SPE International, in which its organizers want to show that the oil and gas industry is not only for men.
The next topic, which the 2020 SPE President dwelled on, was the topic of growth points in the oil and gas industry. The participants discussed what aspects of the industry will develop in the next few years, and also touched upon the current environmental policy of Russia and the United States in the oil and gas industry and possible steps that can be taken to improve it. During the conversation, representatives of Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter also spoke about the new project HSE Now, aimed at debunking myths about the environmental aspects of the oil and gas industry and educating students in the framework of environmental education.
At the end of the call, participants discussed the impact of the activities in the SPE Student Chapters on the students' career paths. Shauna Noonan shared her story of becoming a professional and how SPE helped her in this. Additionally, at the end of the conference, a lively conversation took place about how the work in Student Chapters should be structured and what the SPE Student Chapters should strive for in the modern world.
